Wasini Island

Wasini Island is located in southeastern Kenya, 3 km (1.9 miles) off the coast of the Indian Ocean, 75 kilometers south of Mombasa and 3 km (1.9 miles) opposite Shimoni Village Harbor. [1] It is approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long and 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) across. The name "Wasini Mpunguti" comes from the first inhabitants, who were originally Chinese, they were short Chinese, and therefore the name Wasini Mpunguti, which for the locals means short Chinese. The island has only sidewalks of sharp old coral or sand. There are no cars, carts or bicycles. The load is transported on foot or by a wheel with a fixed tire. Transportation takes place on roads or beaches, which consist mainly of corals and are passable only at low tide, or by boat across the sea. Before 1963, in British colonial times, there was a runway in a lagoon in the far south of the island; only small parts of the asphalt recall this history.
